Common items to settle first
- Grade and applicable standard: state the standard number and edition with the grade name.
- Tolerance designation: decide whether to use an ISO grade such as h9 or plus/minus limits.
- Required mill certificate items: state the chemistry and test items to be reported, and the format.
Items to state in the order
| Item | What to state |
|---|
| Dimensions and tolerance grade | Diameter (or across-flats), tolerance grade or limits |
|---|
| Roundness and straightness | Form tolerances needed beyond the diameter tolerance, and how they are measured |
|---|
| Surface condition | Drawn, ground or peeled finish, roughness, acceptance of seams or decarburization |
|---|
| Hardness and heat-treatment condition | Delivery condition (as-rolled, annealed, quenched and tempered, etc.) and hardness range |
|---|
| Length, cutting and bar ends | Mill or fixed length, length tolerance, cut-end finish or chamfer |
|---|
| Quantity and packing | Quantity and split deliveries, bundle size, rust protection, packing and labels |
|---|
| Inspection and testing | Additional tests, non-destructive testing, witnessed inspection and acceptance criteria |
|---|
Items to check on the mill certificate
| Item | What to check |
|---|
| Chemical composition | Within the range of the ordered grade and standard; heat number matches the marking on the material |
|---|
| Mechanical properties | Required items such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and hardness are reported and meet the criteria |
|---|
| Heat-treatment condition | Matches the ordered delivery condition; treatment details reported where required |
|---|
| Dimensions | Match the ordered diameter and length; measured results included where required |
|---|
